Box Cat Review – Frogger Gets His Revenge

I had been enjoying the super casual retro gaming goodness of Box Cat for almost a week now that I forgot to write the review for it. While the simple controls did not impress me at first, it proves that the is more to just first impressions. This the the Box Cat review.

The trailer is used with the developer’s permission.

8-Bit Pixellated Goodness

In Frogger you should avoid the vehicles. In Box Cat ($1.99 via iTunes), you control an overly aggressive pixellated  kitty that runs right through vehicles sending them flying into one another, causing traffic mayhem while the retrotastic chiptune sounds play in the background.

With the left and right buttons or a tilt of the device, the kitty will sprint across the street, sending every car on its way flying. While doing so, you can collect coins from passing birds, and when you collect three, Box Cat turns into a huge Super Box Cat that does not need acceleration to send things flying.

The game offers three distinct game modes to choose from:

  • Adventure Mode  where you are given a time limit to meet a quota of cars to destroy in order to progress to the next level
  • Survival Mode where you must destroy each and every car that passes and not let any get away or it is game over on the third miss
  • Rush Hour Mode where you are given 90 seconds to see how many cars you can destroy for points

OMG! It's Kitzilla!

Box Cat offers challenges for you to achieve. These challenges are given in batches and when a batch is completed, you unlock a new character, like the cute Hat Cat or the greenish Zombie Cat. These kitties are not different from the original character, well, except from the name and the appearance.

To Wrap Up

This game is casual at its best — it is fun, easy to pick up, simple and very entertaining. While most iOS games try to emulate games like Angry Birds or Cut the Rope, they do not last that long in someone’s springboard. Box Cat proves that sometimes, simple is great. 5/5.
