Chicken Balls HD Review – Not Just Another Angry Birds Clone

OK, so Chicken Balls might sound like a delicious snack that you might want to be munching on while watching a Youtube movie, but Chicken Balls HD ($2.99 via iTunes) is a really hilarious iPad game that combines a tried and tested Angry Birds-esque gameplay with others. Update (11/2/2011): Chicken Balls HD  is free right now.

Chicken Balls! Chicken That Are Shaped Like Balls!

In Chicken Balls, you are to launch ball-shaped chicken to pop the bubble that traps baby chicks. As you might have guessed (and the title suggests it too), yest this is super familiar with Angry Birds. This however is not just an Angry Bird clone. Chicken Balls includes various elements such as other animals to hit the bubbles, eggs to collect, pachinko-like obstacles that remind me of Peggle, and the hilarious Farmegeddon. More on those later.

The Delicious Stuff

Well, to start off, Chicken Balls does stay faithful to cloning Angry Birds. Even the interface is very much like Angry Birds and I do not have any problem with that. Even a granny who plays Angry Birds will have no problem playing this game on the fly.

Ah, unlike Angry Birds though, the targets are not the only thing that you should be aiming for. Scattered around the levels are eggs that you can optionally collect (or make other farm critters collect, including the chicks you free). If you collect all the eggs and free all the chicks, you unleash the hilarious Farmageddon (oops, make that, FAAAAARMAAAGEEDDOOOOON!!!) which rains down tons of farm animals from the sky that destroys the level for epic scores. Additionally, Farmageddon helps you hit UFO’s in the level to make aliens come out. Bonus pints for hitting the aliens with your fingers before the touch the ground. Farmageddon is also accompanied by a funny country-sounding banjo background music that makes the animal-raining, alien smashing experience even more grand.

Another thing I love about each level is the addition of Peggle-esque pachinko obstacles that are surprisingly fun (or frustrating, sometimes). Oh, and the power ups are awesome, too!

The Replayability is Endless

That is for sure. With the eggs included in the game, you are in for a lot of play time, especially if you are a high score junkie. The feeling of three starring the game through Farmageddon feels so great.
